Is it dangerous?

The greatest misconception about Africa is that it’s dangerous. Indeed some parts of the continent are (just like any continent), but the places we operate are as safe as anywhere else you might travel to with us. As with all countries, there are regions to avoid. In the same way you wouldn’t wander around some parts of Bristol at night, so you wouldn’t stroll around the back streets of Nairobi at night either.  It’s all about common sense.  

In a word: No. The parts of Africa in which we operate are not dangerous, and we always heed travel advice from the Foreign Office.

What about the threat of kidnap and terrorism?

Across parts of Africa, extremism is present.  Generally speaking, Southern and Eastern Africa are very peaceful.  Sections of East Africa (the northern coastline and the far north of Kenya near the Somalia border) have seen troubles recently, but these are areas that we avoid. We only send you to places we are wholeheartedly confident in going to ourselves.  We have - and do - take our families to the regions that we cover.

Am I going to be eaten alive by mosquitos?

It depends where and when.  All you need to know is that we have been everywhere we sell and will not send you to an area where mosquitoes are prevalent.  A little local, seasonal and geographical knowledge goes a long way to ensuring you stay well away from the swarms.

I love the idea of staying in a tent, but I don’t really like camping…

Falling asleep to the sounds of the African bush is very special indeed. Romantic, exciting, adventurous and a real education, we encourage a stay in tents.  However, these are not tents as we know in the UK.  The Meru style tents we use are huge, the canvas extremely thick and in most cases there is running water, large raised comfortable beds, a dressing room and sometimes electricity.  However, we also operate ‘fly camping’ trips which do leave modern amenities behind for those who really want to get back to basics.
