Argentina

Much like Brazil, Argentina is a hulking mass occupying a large percentage of South America. The highest and lowest points in the Americas are within Argentina – Aconcagua at 6,970m and Laguna del Carbon at -105m respectively – which results in diverse landscapes and equally diverse flora and fauna. With the plain-rich pampas making up much of the central areas, and jungle in the far north east, the contrast between here and the rolling mountains of Patagonia in the south is stark.

Due to its size, most fly around Argentina but flights can be expensive if not booked in advance. The buses are very comfortable and good value for money, but journeys can be extremely long. We recommend flying for the really long trips, but bus for anything less than 10 hours as it is a great way to see the country.

The two most notable nature reserves are Punta Tombo and Peninsular Valdes in the Patagonia region. Home to penguins, sea lions, birds, whales guanacos and rheas it’s well worth travelling this far south to see the contrast to the north. Walking tours are excellent across the south, but particualy so in the south.  It’s also worth noting that skiing in Argentina is superb. Unheard of and thus great value (once you’re there), our favourite resorts are Las Lenas and San Carlos de Bariloche.
